We're going to South Africa
The United States is going back to the World Cup. For the sixth straight time. I know it should be routine now, but qualifying for the World Cup never is. Of the 208 nations in FIFA, the US has consistently been in the best 32 invited to compete for a world championship. And maybe for the first time, the US will will be mentioned as a darkhorse candidate to win the damn thing.
For American soccer fans, World Cup qualifying is a stressful time. The fragile success of American soccer over the last 20 years is still on the line every four years. A bad run through the Hex and the progress made will evaporate overnight.
But not tonight. Maybe next year the US will get bounced quickly and give more fuel to the naysayers. But at least for another four years, US Soccer has proved it deserves a shot. We proved once again that we belong.
